Appleton North stuns Kimberly 21-10, level 4 in playoffs | WFRV Local 5

(WFRV) – The Local 5 Game of the Week did not disappoint between the Appleton North Lightning and the Kimberly Papermakers on Friday.

The Papermakers hosted the Lightning in a week four second leg of the season where Kimberly came out on top. The game started with a 28-yard field goal from Kimberly to score the first.

Matthew Scheckleman responded in a big way for the Lightning by finding Alex Heran for a 5-yard touchdown as they returned to the field. Appleton North led 7-3.

In fourth, Blake Barry found the end zone for Kimberly to take a 10-7 lead over Appleton North. The back-and-forth battle will continue in the first half as Cal Martine traveled 64 yards for an Appleton North touchdown to take the 14-10 lead.

The game was calm in the third quarter, but the fourth quarter warmed up as Kimberly forced a fumble and shed some light on the Papermakers.

This forced turnover would not be enough for Kimberly as they would not be able to cash in. Cal Martine would charge the Papermakers with an 8-yard touchdown, passing defenders and finding the end zone to provide the confidence the Lightning needed, taking the Lead 21-10 at the end of the 4th quarter.

The Papermakers had one more chance, lost in fourth and couldn’t convert.

Appleton North ended an 11-game losing streak against Kimberly with a 21-10 win to move up to level four in the playoffs. The Lightning will play Franklin next week.

WFRV-TV sports reporter Kyle Malzhan met with Appleton North head coach after the big win over Kimberly.
