  • The IPL 2022 auction is scheduled to take place in the second week of February
  • Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan and Harshal Patel are some of the Indian players who can achieve record salaries
  • There are still a number of Indian players for whom the franchises would not hesitate to break the bank.

The 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction is not far away. With the draft picks already decided by the two new franchises – Ahmedabad and Lucknow – it is clear which players will participate in the auctions for new franchises.

A plethora of Indian players will be up for grabs when the 2-day auction takes place in the second week of February. Since the existing 8 franchises were not allowed to retain more than 4 players each, some really talented players had to be released into the bidding pool.

Getting the best Indian players for the team is one of the key success factors for the franchises. Considering who will go under the hammer, there are a few that franchises wouldn’t hesitate to break the bank for.

Shreyas Iyer: The man who led the Delhi Capitals to the IPL 2020 final is one of the biggest names in the auction. Iyer reportedly left Delhi as he wanted to run an IPL franchise, but saw that opportunity taken away from him. DC bosses decided to keep Rishabh Pant in charge after the wicket-keeper was named captain in Iyer’s absence at the start of the 2021 season.

Iyer may not be a specialist in the T20 arena, but he is one of the most reliable mid-level hitters in Indian cricket. With the experience of taking Delhi to the IPL 2020 Finals as well, Iyer will be high on the franchises wish list not only as a batsman but also as a captain.

Harshal Patel: Winner of the purple cap of the IPL 2021 season, Harshal Patel was surprisingly not part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) retentions. The franchise decided to keep Mohammed Siraj on the team instead. Harshal has since become an India international as well, having represented the national team in the T20Is.

Whether it’s his record from the previous season for RCB or his exceptional middle and death abilities, Harshal is one of the best in the business when it comes to the shortest format. A record bid for him at the IPL 2022 auction would therefore come as no surprise.

Ishan Kishan: Mumbai Indians were truly spoiled for choice when it came to retaining players ahead of the IPL 2022 auction. While Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah were expected to be first picks, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Ishan Kishan were in the running for 3rd place. The franchise decided to keep Surya. Since Hardik is set to lead the franchise from Ahmedabad, Ishan remains a player up for grabs at the auction.

Kishan’s offensive prowess atop the batting order will be a boon to any franchise that chains him up. In fact, there aren’t many better offensive hitters available right now. Expect the wicket-keeper batsman to unleash a big tussle at the auction.
