2021 Godzilla vs. Kong was the last blockbuster crossover featuring iconic characters going head-to-head and Godzilla vs. Kong 2 is on track. Audiences are always fascinated to see fights like this on screen. It’s something that every kid with an action figure has experienced through their own imagination and many of those kids have grown up bringing such battles to the big screen.
Such crossovers have become increasingly common over the past twenty years with the emergence of shared universes, but there are also plenty of surprising occurrences of this in the past. But some fights are more satisfying to watch on screen than others.
ten Lake Placid versus Anaconda
As a Syfy original, Lake Placid vs. Anaconda features predictably second-rate acting and CGI. The creature fights are mostly seen in split-second previews with actors reacting and providing off-screen exposition.
Still, fans of both will have a blast watching two of the most iconic movie monsters go head-to-head. And since there are multiple crocodiles and anacondas, there are many fights throughout the film and at unpredictable times. Anyone who likes to have fun on a budget will be delighted to see crocodiles explode when run over by an anaconda and an anaconda thrown into the blades of a helicopter by a crocodile.
9 Indiana Jones vs. Dracula
1992 The Chronicles of Young Indiana Jones follows the exploits of young Indy as he encounters historical figures such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Red Baron and Theodore Roosevelt. One such meeting sees Indy clash with Count Dracula himself, Vlad the Impaler, in the series’ only supernatural episode.
What makes this fight so great is because the characters are a perfect match for each other. Indiana Jones is known for dealing with supernatural threats and Dracula, played by Jurassic Park’s Bob Peck, an actor many forget is in Young India, is an extremely daunting challenge for him. They engage in a large fight on a catwalk above the castle courtyard with Indy desperately defending himself with only an axe. And seeing Indy finish off the vampire with a stake through the heart is extremely satisfying.
8 Frankenstein versus Wolfman
Years before Marvel, the spooky verse Universal Monsters was cinema’s first shared universe. One of these crossover films was that of 1943 Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man.
What makes combat so satisfying is how carefully thought out it is. It’s not just two guys in suits punching each other. Each of them uses unique combat styles tailored to their character. Frankenstein’s monster is like a slow tank while the Wolfman is nimble and fast. But although the Wolfman is often thrown, he is strong enough to knock down his opponent multiple times.
seven Darth Vader versus Rexy
After discovering the power of the closet, Omri loads it with his favorite figures and turns the key. Upon coming to life, a lightsaber-wielding Darth Vader battles Rexy the T-Rex of jurassic park. Additionally, Robocop, a GI Joe and a Ferengi and a Cardassian from star trek all are fighting in the back of the closet.
Vader and Rexy pounce on each other before noticing Omri. It’s such a beautiful scene because it perfectly demonstrates every boy’s action figure fantasy. The fight is short and we don’t see the carnage of the match’s potential, but it’s so cool to see the unexpected spectacle of two iconic characters going head-to-head.
6 Alien vs Predator
A 1989 Dark Horse comic introduced the concept of Xenomorphs and Predator clashing. In the years since, there have been dozens of comics, popular Alien vs Predator video games, and more. Finally, in 2004, Fox studios brought them together on screen.
Seeing these two iconic alien creatures do battle on screen was worth the price of admission. It’s brutal and satisfying combat and the filmmakers made sure to use each of their unique abilities cleverly. When a Xenomorph’s tail is severed, its acidic blood spurts out and is used as a projectile by the creature. Next, the Yautja’s razor-sharp net is hurled at a Xenomorph’s head, marking a unique green grid of sour blood.
5 Freddy versus Jason
With the two franchises having been owned by different companies in the 1980s, it seemed unlikely that Freddy and Jason would ever meet on film. But the acquisition of Friday 13 by Warner Brother subsidiary New Line Cinema in the 90s, brought together horror icons under one roof. In 2003, they were finally pitted against each other in Freddy versus Jason.
The fights between Jason and Freddy are terribly bloody and surprisingly clever. The fight in the imaginary world shows off Freddy’s powers as he grows new arms after Jason cuts him off. And Freddy’s exploitation of Jason’s fear of water is brilliant. Their second fight scene at the end of the film sees them each using their surroundings in classic Friday 13-style. And seeing Jason carry Freddy’s severed head, which winks at the audience, was the perfect way to end it.
4 Mecha Godzilla vs. Iron Giant and Gundam
Loan player one was a pop culture spectacle featuring every franchise imaginable in the movie game world, the oasis. During the climactic battle of , the Iron Giant piloted by Aech clashes with Mecha Godzilla led by Nolan Sorrento. Toshiro soon joins the fight in The RX-78-2 Gundam.
Only a story like that of Loan player one could unite such unrelated giant robots on screen. The battle between these 3 titans is nothing short of glorious and has left fans of all three franchises totally satisfied. Each of them uses their signature weapons; The Iron Giant’s arm cannon, Mecha Godzilla’s atomic blast, and the Gundam sword all see action in this clash of the titans.
3 Batman V. Superman
Batman and Superman are of course 2 properties of DC Comics and have appeared side by side in thousands of comic books and cartoons. But Zack Snyder’s 2016 movie Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice was their first meeting on screen.
You’d think Superman’s powers would make this a no-contest, but the filmmakers cleverly had Batman create tools to exploit Superman’s weakness. Along with a powerful exoskeleton, Batman built a kryptonite grenade launcher and a kryptonite spear that helped him gain the upper hand. While opinions on the film were mixed, the fight between Batman and Superman was a sight to behold.
2 Godzilla vs. King Kong
Godzilla has faced many famous on-screen adversaries over the years, including Rodan, Ghidorah, and even Charles Barkley in the 1990s. Nike Advertising. But nothing beats seeing Kaiju fighting cinema’s most iconic monkey in 2021 Godzilla vs. Kong.
The fights are absolutely satisfying and some of the best action scenes in the movie. These are limitless and larger than life confrontations in breathtaking settings. Godzilla triumphs in their first battle which takes place both underwater and aboard a fleet of warships. They later clash again in the glorious neon backdrop of Hong Kong with Kong countering Godzilla’s atomic breath with a mighty axe. Even better, that wasn’t the end of the story as a sequel is already on the way.
1 Team Iron Man vs. Team Captain America
The crossover series that tops all other crossover series, The Marvel Cinematic Universe launched in 2008 and brought together iconic Marvel heroes on screen in dozens of films. For example, Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man first met in 2012. The Avengers and memorably fought for custody of Loki.
But it was Captain America: Civil War it really upped the ante. The rivalry between Ironman and Captain America came to a head with the iconic battle at the airport. Seeing Iron Man, Black Widow, and Spider-Man go head-to-head with Captain America, Ant-Man, and Scarlet Witch finally brought years of school lunchtime debates to the big screen in all its glory. Another epic showdown between Iron Man and the team of Captain America and the Winter Soldier served as the film’s climax.
