The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has secured a superb media rights deal for the next cycle (2023-27) from the Prime Minister of India (IPL). With the package cumulatively worth more than INR 48,000 crore, BCCI’s revenue from media rights has seen a stunning increase from the last package sold to Star India for Rs. 16,000 crore.
While BCCI’s revenue has increased several-fold, the increased flow of funds should also benefit franchises. According to a report by Insidesportgroups like Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indian, Kolkata Knight Riders and six other franchises are expected to see their revenue increase by almost 100%.

In the IPL 2022, each of the 10 franchises would have earned Rs. 201.65 crores from media rights revenue. In IPL 2023, their revenue from media rights is expected to exceed INR 400 crore.

The figure will continue to rise further. In 2025, the flow of funds from the same component is expected to approach Rs. 500 crores. In the last year of the next cycle (2027), media rights revenue is expected to exceed Rs. 550 crore figure.

“Along with everyone else, franchise partners are our primary stakeholders. When BCCI benefits, it’s obvious that the larger stakeholder will benefit as well. In accordance with the agreement between BCCI and the franchises, 50% of media and sponsorship revenues are divided between the franchises.

Besides media and sponsorship revenue from the central IPL pool, franchises also earn money through their own sponsorship deals, ticket sales, etc. The BCCI earning a total of rupees. 48,390 crores from the new media rights deal, half of which will be allocated to the 10 IPL franchises.
